Our History
From Humble Beginnings to Midwest Powerhouse
In 1994 Mose G. Chandler founded Petroleum Equipment Company Incorporated (PEI) on behalf of John Dotson of Mid-State Petroleum Equipment Company of Hallsville, Mo. Although serving as a branch of Mid-State Petroleum Equipment Company, PEI functioned as an autonomous company with a focus on providing petroleum equipment, construction planning and maintenance service for local contractors and fuel-site operators.
In October 1995, the company was purchased by Mose and Janet Chandler and re-incorporated as Petroleum Equipment Company Incorporated of Kansas City. The company was successful from the very beginning and operated out of the Chandler’s home basement with two phones and a single card table until the first office location became move-in ready. By 1997, the fast growth and prosperity PEI experienced led to the purchase of a much larger building, and the company’s current home office location, at 1401 E. 9th Street in Kansas City.
In April 2005, the Chandlers retired to Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., and PEI was collectively sold to Mike McLaughlin, James Robinett, and Dave Velky.
PEI was sold again in December 2020 with Dave Velky retaining ownership as executive vice president. Andy Toomey, a long-time employee and leader, assumed the role of president.
Throughout its remarkable history, PEI has continued to grow and expand its range of product offerings while fulfilling a mission to provide customers with the most responsive and reliable service possible. In recent years, the company has added new trucks to its fleet of maintenance vehicles, new employees to its team of fueling experts, and a new branch office in Topeka, Kansas, to better serve area contractors and fuel site operators.
Today, the company provides consultation, replacement parts and service for a growing number of customers involved in retail and fleet fueling, transportation, agriculture, aviation and marine, as well as industrial and emergency fueling.
